History Of Coffee

Ever wondered from where does your favorite cup of coffee come from? Or what was the history behind coffee becoming one of the most preferred beverages across the world?

Coffee was discovered in 17th Century by a goatherd in Ethiopia who found that his goats were extra energetic after eating fruits from a particular plant. He tried eating the fruit himself but found out that they were bitter. He angrily tossed the remaining fruit that he had in the water that he was boiling for himself to eat. To his surprise, he found out that the boiling water had a pleasing aroma to it. He decided to taste the water out of curiosity, and to his surprise he found himself rejuvenated and less hungry!

Despite the Ethiopians and Arabs guarding their coffee plantations with utmost care, many foreigners including a few Indians managed to smuggle the coffee beans out of the region and started planting them in South Asia and South-East Asian countries. As a result of which, the popularity of coffee not only grew but it also started becoming one of the most sought beverages across the world.

Coffee is extremely popular in India especially down in the south. Coffee growth is also extensive in this part of the country. There are vast coffee plantations in places like Coorg, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Yercaud, being the prominent ones.

There’s a lot that goes into the processing and making of the coffee that you have back at the comfort of your homes or cafes. But let us tell you one thing, when you enjoy taking your first sip of coffee, we find every effort that we have taken worth every moment of it!

Happy brewing and drinking!

Go Green!

We all know how coffee is most of our lifelines! And now, we have something better and healthier for you, which is the one and only, “Green Coffee!” Do you know all the amazing benefits of green coffee? If not, here we are to enlighten you on the wonderful things this coffee can do to you apart from falling in love with it..

Green Coffee beans are unroasted seeds of the plant Coffea Arabica. During roasting, the natural antioxidants present in the coffee beans are removed, which is not at all beneficial for our health. But as these green coffee beans do not go through the same procedure, they are considered as highly beneficial for our overall health. Below are some of the benefits:

  • Fat burner: These beans contain large amount of kelp. It is a certain type of seaweed loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. So, it helps in maintaining the levels of nutrients in our body and perks up the burning metabolism of our body so that we can burn out unwanted fat and calories fast.
  • Rich in anti-oxidants: They are rich in antioxidants, which reduces the damaging effects of free radicals in our body. The raw and unprocessed green coffee beans possess 100% pure Chlorogenic Acid (CGA), which is basically an ester of caffeic acid having strong antioxidant properties. It can put a check on the levels of glucose in our bloodstream and prevent our skin cells from getting dented.

  • Goodbye Diabetes: These green beans are also capable of treating Type 2 Diabetes successfully. Their extract is known to lower high levels of sugar in our bloodstream, while accelerating weight loss.
  • Aging? (What’s that?): These beans are also known to retain high levels of volatile materials as they do not need to undergo the roasting procedure. Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA), Theophylline, Epigallocatechin Gallate, etc. are some of such ingredients that can help us maintain our skin health and avert the appearance of wrinkles. (Wink Wink)
  • Dreamy silky hair: Antioxidant content of green coffee beans is equally beneficial for our hair. As it helps us fight against everything toxic and damaging, our hair remains strong, healthy and beautiful.

It’s just beautiful how nature works its natural way to help us out. So, Go Green! Give this coffee a try and see how it makes a difference, y

With that said, let’s grab an aromatic cup of coffee and read ahead!

  • Cuba: Coffee has been an integral part of life in Cuba since the 18th century. A café Cubano is a sweet and strong espresso which is mixed with sugar while it brews.

  • Japan: In Japan, both hot and cold coffee is readily available in cans from vending machines and supermarkets.

  • Mexico: Café de olla is a delicious spiced coffee, flavored with a cinnamon stick and an unrefined sugar called piloncillo. The drink is traditionally served in clay pots, which are said to impart a slightly earthy taste to the drink. (OMG!)

  • Vietnam: Iced coffee is enjoyed all over the world. In Vietnam, the drink is usually made with dark roast coffee and sweetened condensed milk. (Busy drooling…)

  • Ethiopia: It is the birthplace of coffee. Women often spend 2-3 hours making the coffee, from roasting the beans to serving it to family and guests and use a special spouted pot known as a jebena to make it. Talk about traditions!

  • Turkey: A Turkish proverb tells us that “Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death and sweet as love”. Making the perfect Turkish cup involves boiling extremely finely-ground coffee beans in a pot known as a cevze, with sugar and water, before pouring the drink into small cups. Just wow!

Question to all the coffee aficionados out there! Don’t you agree to this fact that coffee is your ultimate lifeline? Ever imagined a world without coffee? Let’s not even go there, right? To those who agree without hesitation or a thought that this is a fact after all, cheers! But, to those who did hesitate to answer this thinking, “Really?”- below are few of the major reasons why coffee is craved by so many.

Let’s begin with having mind blowing conversations over it. There are always beautiful and memorable memories behind a cuppa’ coffee. For instance, a date. Though this is a modern world where dates happen at a bar or at a diner, a simple date over a hot cup of coffee is not quite dead yet (YAY). Most cafés and coffee shops have art on the walls, music playing and various topics to talk about as you grab your caffeine fix. This can be great material for your conversation.

Then, we have the serious dragging business meetings? Solution: COFFEE! Caffeine helps you focus better. It is a stimulant that makes you more alert and awake. Nobody wants to discuss business with someone who is sluggish or distracted, right? Just one cup of regular coffee might be all you need to get physically/mentally set for the meet and raise the tempo of your discussion.

How about that dreadful Sunday morning? Sunday morning can be despised by some, after the Saturday night party- when you are super hungover and feeling energy-less after being pumped up the whole night…rings a bell? Lemon juice can only be a temporary feel good remedy. But coffee can make your Sunday morning so lively and amazing that you are going to forget that you ever were having ‘them blues.’

When you are chilling with yourself in peace, you must try this deadly combo of happiness. Something you love doing (reading a good book maybe?) + Coffee = Peace of mind. There is this uncanny connection between books and coffee that goes beyond the feeling of coziness induced when we wrap one hand around a warm mug and use the other hand to turn the pages of whatever you are reading. It is a lovely feeling that no words can do justice to. You should just check it out and see for yourself.

Coffee is pure pleasure and satisfaction redefined- can’t deny it. This can go on and on, you know? There is no end to describe why coffee is literally your lifeline and can make this world a much better place- always, any day, anywhere and anytime!
As the poet R.M. Engelhardt once wrote, “A cup of coffee is this little thing that can get us through this sometimes weary world and all the rainy days.”

How do you like your coffee?

Take the first step towards becoming a coffee connoisseur with our mini-guide on the different roasts and their characteristics.

Light Roasts
Light roasts have a light brown colour and a light body, with no oil on the surface of the beans. This kind of roast has a toasted grain taste and distinct acidity to it. The original flavors of the bean are retained to a greater extent when compared to darker roasted coffees and they also have more caffeine content.

Medium Roasts
Medium roasted coffees are medium brown in color with more body than light roasts. While they have no oil on the bean surfaces, medium roasts lack the grainy taste of the light roasts. This gives them a more balanced flavor, aroma, and acidity. Caffeine content of medium roasts is lower than light roasts but more than darker roasts.

Dark Roasts
Dark roasted coffees are a darker shade that closely resembles chocolate. These roasts have a distinct sheen of oil on the surface, which is clearly visible in the cup when the dark roast coffee is brewed. The coffee’s original flavors are overpowered during the roasting process and will generally have a bitter and smoky or even burnt taste. The amount of caffeine is substantially decreased compared to other roasts.

Spanish Roasts
Spanish (alt. Dark French, Neapolitan) is the name of a degree of roast resulting in nearly completely black beans. Spanish-roasted beans have a shiny surface from the oils on the bean surface. Coffee brewed this roast will have none of its original flavours. Instead, the coffee will have a thin body and a dominant charred taste throughout.

Now with this information at your fingertips, you get to decide which shade of coffee roast is the one for you, and take one step towards being a coffee connoisseur in your own right.

Discover what makes our coffee capsule deliver the perfect coffee

You love your cup of coffee. The aroma, the texture and the taste energise all your senses. But, if grinding the beans, spooning out the ground coffee, or boiling the kettle is too troublesome for you. Then Vero could be the thing you are looking for. Vero packs all the joys of coffee into a hassle-free, disposable, plastic capsule, delivering the perfect cup at a push of a button.

How do we do this? Let’s start with our coffee capsule.  Similar to a teabag, the coffee capsule is designed to deliver a pre-portioned serving of exquisite coffee. But, what makes these capsules special?

Like the best of wines, the process of making the best coffee starts from selecting the finest raw materials. From premium coffee plantations across India, red, cherry shaped coffee fruits are harvested, when they are perfectly ripe.  The fruits are hand-picked to guarantee the best quality.

Superior quality is the drive behind every Vero capsule. To ensure each and every cup is perfect, the beans are removed from the fruit and then sorted by size and density. Then finally it is sorted by colour, both by hand and electronically.

After sorting, the beans are roasted to enhance the taste. The perfect roasting is determined by time, temperature and other factors suited to the blend. Since poor roasting can ruin the finest coffee, an expert develops a specific roast profile for each blend, to deliver an authentic coffee experience.

Grinding releases the hidden aromas in coffee. The grind technique enhances the flavour and adds texture to every coffee. Since every coffee is different, the grinding technique used is different for different blends.

Finally, the coffee is packed in a capsule and sealed, so that nothing can interfere with the quality of the coffee when it is delivered straight to your cup.
